What's Our Duke of Edinburgh Stakes Tips for Royal Ascot?

We've been studying the cards, form, stats, trends and more for the Duke of Edinburgh Stakes at Royal Ascot, and here's our thoughts ahead of the race:

This 12f contest has tended to be dominated by four and five year olds over the last decade, although Alan King’s experienced Scarlet Dragon was victorious twelve months ago.

Simon and Ed Crisford’s Aaddeey may only have won two of his first five appearances, however, the convincing nature of his victory at Newmarket over this distance suggests that he will be competitive in a race of this nature. He won by four and a half lengths and James Doyle is likely to take the ride yet again.

Hughie Morrison’s Quickthorn has won two of his last three runs and beat some decent rivals Haydock in a class 3 contest at the end of May.
Last year’s winning trainer Alan King has another decent prospect in the shape of
Tritonic and although he’s been sent over the obstacles recently, he does have some decent victories on the flat and went close in the Old Rowley Cup Handicap back in October 2020.

Grand Bazaar could be an option, after finishing third in a five-runner affair at Newmarket. He came up against some decent rivals at the beginning of May and that display was encouraging enough to suggest he’s up to this task.

On the day:

ZABEEL CHAMPION 5.35 – Ascot (14/1 each way) – Another improving handicapper who was completing a hat-trick when just clinging on in a small field at Newmarket last time. More needed in this much deeper race but further progress would come as no surprise.

Leading contenders include DURSTAN, HEREBY, WEST END CHARMER and EL MISK.

Keith's final choice

WEST END CHARMER 16:40 Ascot 6/1 each way – [Quickly out of the stalls and proceeded to make all winning easily. Is likely to be stepped up to Listed class.] Not tried in Listed class yet but this valuable prize is here for the taking. Looks well treated under his penalty. Mark Johnston has a good record in this race.

How it fared

WEST END CHARMER 3RD – They were not hanging around considering this was a middle distance race on softish going. WEST END CHARMER attempted to make all and was caught and passed late on but we got third and a bit of place money.

To be certain of getting Keith's final thoughts on every Royal Ascot race, make sure you have joined the FRT VIP Club.

This is what Keith said about the 2019 Duke of Edinburgh Stakes:

Keith tip went for an each way shout in FUJAIRA PRINCE which was 13/2 when advised.

What our members tipped in the Duke of Edinburgh Stakes

Each day we ask our members to select their Pick 6, their NAP for each race of the day.  We then collate all the picks, and present the top selections to our VIP members.

Simon & Ed Crisford's AADDEEY gets the nod with 27.8% of the selections, with QUICKTHORN not too far behind with 16.7%.

It might be the first race of the day, but all eyes are on Final Song for this with over 27% of the votes – Divine Spirit with just over 15% and Ickworth in third with 13.3%.

Royal Ascot Duke of Edinburgh Stakes Results

2 Raymond Tusk 25/1
3 Zabeel Champion 17/2
14 ran

1st Scarlet Dragon 33/1

2nd Deja 9/1

3rd West End Charmer 4/1

4th Le Don De Vie 11/1

1 Baghdad 7/2
2 Ben Vrackie 7/1
3 Fujaira Prince 4/1
4 Corgi 7/1

Our Verdict:
19 ran; sh, 1½l, 1¼l
If you took the advised price of 13/2 you will have seen a small return for your money with Keith’s selection of Fujaira Prince, however it was Baghdad which was in the members choice which went on to win the race by a short head. Fujaira Prince only managed 3rd place, behind Ben Vrackie who was denied the first place by a short head.
