When is the Buckingham Palace Handicap at Royal Ascot?

Royal Ascot Thursday 16th June at 6.10pm
The Buckingham Palace Handicap
Age: 3yo+
Distance: Seven furlongs
Prize: £tbc

History of the Buckingham Palace Handicap

This was first run in 2002 when the Royal Ascot Meeting was extended to five days to commemorate the Queens Golden Jubilee.

The race continued until 2014, it was replaced in the Royal Ascot schedule by the Group 1 Commonwealth Cup in 2015.

Reinstated to the Royal Ascot schedule as a one-off in 2020 when six additional races were added because of the depleted race program due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Many experts believe it was a mistake to drop this valuable 7-furlong handicap and they are applauding its return to the Royal Ascot fold, even if it may be for just the one year.

Royal Ascot Buckingham Palace Handicap Trends and Statistics

Here are the Buckingham Palace Handicap 12 year Trends and Statistics:

Years 2003 – 2004, 2006 – 2014 (in 2005 the meeting was held at York) and 2020.

  • Age – Nine of the twelve winners have been aged between four and six.
  • Sex – Ten of the twelve winners were geldings.
  • Country – Seven of the twelve winners were bred in Great Britain, four in Ireland and one in the USA.
  • Colour – Six of the twelve winners were bay (b) and four were chestnut (ch).
  • Starting Price (SP) – All of the twelve winners returned a SP of 8/1 or higher, ten of them were between 12/1 and 33/1.
  • Starting Price Rank – This has been a bad race for favourites and fancied horses. No favourites won in those twelve years and only two winners came from the first three in the betting.
  • Headgear – Ten of the twelve winners wore no headgear. One wore blinkers and the other a hood.
  • Weight Carried – Eight of the twelve winners have carried 9st less.
  • Draw – The draw is a difficult one to work out, Five of the twelve winners have been drawn in stall 9 or lower. Seven of the twelve winners were drawn in stall 21 or higher. So avoid stalls 10 – 20.
  • Last run form – None of the twelve winners won last time out and just four finished in the first three.
  • Days Since Last Run – Eleven of the twelve winners last ran between 6 and 42 days ago.
  • Official Rating – Nine of the twelve winners have had an official rating of 90 or higher.

What's Our Buckingham Palace Handicap Tips for Royal Ascot?

We've been studying the cards, form, stats, trends and more for the Buckingham Palace Handicap at Royal Ascot, and here's our thoughts ahead of the race:

This 7f contest sees Tim Easterby’s Boardman lead the betting and this 5-year old has won each of his last three starts. Having only won once in his previous 11 outings, he has certainly hit a purple patch and will be hoping to keep his superb run of form going this week.
He beat a decent field at Chester at the end of May which including Hey Jonesy and Another Batt.

Mark Johnston’s Red Mirage is unbeaten so far, however, all of his victories have come on the AW track and there are a few unknowns coming into this contest.

Ametist was last seen winning a decent handicap at Newmarket and is looking to protect a three-race unbeaten streak.

Charlie Appleby’s On the Warpath could be an interesting option in this race. He was well-beaten in the Criterion Stakes at Newmarket, however, he was far from outclassed at Meydan before that, and although we haven’t seen him since Boxing Day (when winning at Wolverhampton), the Godolphin-owned runner should be fully wound up for this.

ALDAARY 6.10 – Ascot (11/2) – Impressive winner of both starts at 2 yrs and again when striking on handicap bow over C&D in May. Had unbeaten run ended at Goodwood but it was another excellent effort. Tongue tied and more to come.

Absolutely wide-open race to kick off proceedings, the bookmakers go 8/1 the field and the leading contenders are DAARIK, MUTAMAASIK, CLIFFS OF CAPRI, BLOWN BY WIND, FIRST CONTACT and GREENSIDE. I have my eye on one at a double-figure price.

Keith's final choice

13:15 BLOWN BY WIND 25/1 each way – Was a decent two-year-old clocking up a string of good results. Won well enough at Newmarket 10 days ago and will appreciate this easier going. Massive each-way claims at big odds.

How it fared

BLOWN BY WIND went off at 25/1 was a bit unruly at the start, the field split into three groups which is never good and our selection finished mid-division.
