When is the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot 2022?

Royal Ascot: Tuesday 14th June 2022 at 3.05pm
The Coventry Stakes (Group 2)
Age: 2yo
Distance: Six furlongs
Weights – 9st 1lb (3lb allowance for fillies)
Prize: £150,000

History of the Coventry Stakes race at Royal Ascot

The Coventry Stakes was first run in 1890. It was named after George William Coventry the 9th Earl of Coventry.  Initially Group 3, the Coventry Stakes was promoted to a Grade 2 race in 2004.  This sprint takes place on the first day of Royal Ascot over 6 furlongs and is open to 2-year-olds.

The most successful Jockey in the race has been Sir Gordon Richards with 9 wins between 1932 and 1951.

The leading trainer for this race is Aidan O’Brien with 9 winners between 1997 and 2019 when he scored with Arizona.

The fastest time recorded for the winner of the Coventry Stakes was in 2017 when Rajasinghe, ridden by Stevie Donohoe finished in just 1 minute 12.39 seconds.  Red Clubs managed faster in 2005, but this was when the Royal Ascot meeting was held at York Race.

2020 saw a great upset when 150/1 Nando Parrado won the Coventry under steerage of Adam Kirby and Trainer CG Cox.

Rajasinghe winning the Coventry Stakes in 2017 in record time.

What's Our Coventry Stakes Tips for Royal Ascot?

We've been studying the cards, form, stats, trends and more for the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot, and here's our thoughts ahead of the race:

With the exception of last year’s 150/1 winner Nando Parrado, this race has generally been kind to favourite backers.

With nine of the last 12 winners of this race having been positioned in the top three, Castle Star is likely to be popular. This exciting 2-year old has never raced outside of Ireland though, however, he looked extremely effective over 6f and his RPR has increased with every outing.

Second favourite Cadamosto is unproven on turf and could be worth swerving. Although the favourite is progressive and could win this, it may be worth backing King of Bavaria.

Aidan O’Brien has won four of the last 12 renewals of this race and this speedy colt beat subsequent winners in a decent 2-year old maiden at Naas at the beginning of May.

On the day we tipped:

EBRO RIVER (11/1 each way) – Clearly isn't a straightforward type given he has hung both ways already, but evidently has more than his share of talent, supplementing his Doncaster success in the National Stakes. Up in trip slightly today, but will be looking to make it a hat-trick now.

How we did:

The race was won by 11/1 shot Berkshire Shadow,  the pack then followed up, with a neck in it, which is where our selection EBRO RIVER finished in 5th place.  Hopefully you managed to get the extra place available with some bookmakers for the each way win.

Another Aidan O’Brien horse ADMIRAL NELSON has been installed as the favourite. I think this is a toss-up between ADMIRAL NELSON, CREATIVE FORCE and QAADER

Keith's final choice

13:50 THUNDER OF NIAGRA 40/1 each way – Earned a place in his lineup with a comfortable Newcastle win. Can pull off a shock result.

How it fared

THUNDER OF NIAGRA 50/1 6th /15 – I went for the wrong outsider as the winner was 150/1 an all time record for Royal Ascot. Ran a good race up with the leaders before fading to 6th (Bet365 had 16/1 down to 8th place), the favourite was further back in 8th.

To be certain of getting Keith's final thoughts on every Royal Ascot race, make sure you have joined the FRT VIP Club.

This is what Keith said about the 2019 Coventry Stakes:

Leading Contenders

MONARCH OF EGYPT 5/1 – Destined to be a leading light in Aiden O’Brien’s Ballydoyle team.  Made an impressive debut at Naas in April and will continue to progress.

HURRICANE IVOR 7/1 – French raider, impressive on debut run at Chantilly could be anything.

THREAT 10/1 – Won a Newmarket maiden pretty comfortably on debut at the start of May expected to progress.

WELL OF WISDOM 14/1 – Desperately unlucky at Newbury in May bumped at the two pole and lost all action but battled back to finish third in a tight three-way photograph.

Conclusion

Keith had his eye on MONARCH OF EGYPT which he thought a cracking chance but the value lies with WELL OF WISDOM 14/1 each way and that was his main selection for the race.

What our members tipped in the Coventry Stakes

Each day we ask our members to select their Pick 6, their NAP for each race of the day.  We then collate all the picks, and present the top selections to our VIP members.  Here's how it went for the Coventry Stakes:

Race Two | 3:05pm – Coventry Stakes  🥇 BERKSHIRE SHADOW

Fairly wide open this but it's DHABAB for John & Thady Gosden with Robert Havlin on board that just edges out in front with 17.8%
Gisburn the next best with 14.2% and Kaufymaker on 13.1%.

A huge 42.3% of the selections are on Quadrilateral in the Coventry Stakes. Frankie Dettori does get some support on Alpine Star with 17.3% but plenty of early support for Run Wild but now only 15.7% of your selections.

The Coventry Stakes is the first two year old race of Royal Ascot and plenty of support for Arizona with 28.7 % of the votes, hot on the heels though is Guildsman with 23.5%

3 Guildsman 6/1

Our Verdict:

Well Keith didn’t fancy the favourite, Arizona but Aidan O’Brien won his 9th win in this race in a nail biting finish. It took Ryan Moore to the last furlong to make his move with Arizona, taking the lead and winning the race by half a length from Threat. 28.8% of our own members selected Arizona, with 23.3% who thought that Guildsman would win, but Guildsman could only manage third place.

Watch the thrilling finish of the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot 2019, and watch Arizona win the race by half a length from Threat:
