History of the The Ascot Stakes race at Royal Ascot

Run for the first time in 1840, this race is run over the same marathon trip as Thursday’s Gold Cup.

This race generally attracts a large field of runners, jumps bred horses usually do well in the race and the roll call of winning trainers includes several National Hunt giants including Martin Pipe and in recent years Willie Mullins has made this race his own having saddled 4 of the last 9 winners.

What's Our Ascot Stakes Tips for Royal Ascot?

We've been studying the cards, form, stats, trends and more for the Ascot Stakes at Royal Ascot, and here's our thoughts ahead of the race:

This 2m4f contest is one of the longest flat races of the summer season and it has produced some decent priced winners in recent years.

Trainer Willie Mullins also has a good record in this contest and has won three of the last six renewals. The Irish handler also has this year’s favourite Rayapour who was last seen finishing third in a maiden hurdle at Kilbeggan in mid-May. That was his first start in Ireland having previously enjoyed a fruitful spell in France for trainer Alain de Royer-Dupre.
He won over 1m4f on the flat multiple times, however, he showed his staying qualities in that latest outing over the obstacles.

Stablemate Saldier has followed a similar path, and clocked up a recent success at Listowel at the beginning of the month. Irish Cesarewitch winner Cape Gentleman is in the line-up for this year’s contest and is versatile ground-wise. Emmet Mullins’ five-year old has won on both soft and good ground and shouldn’t be affected by the weather conditions.

Couer de Lion won this event last year, and is back to defend his crown. His mark has risen to 94 for this year’s event, although his fourth place finish in the Chester Cup handicap was a step in the right direction.
Although he will be hard to beat, Cape Gentleman could be the one to side with this time around.

On the day:

ELYSIAN FLAME 5.00 – Ascot (14/1 each way) – Right back on track this spring, winning handicap hurdle and 2m Newbury Flat handicap before left with a hopeless task in a messy Chester contest last month. This test today will suit him better and is a very appealing each-way shout at this price.

As no winner has returned at odds of 12/1 or more in the last 11 years it is best to concentrate on horses in that price range. The market leader is Nicky Henderson's VERDANA BLUE and other leading contenders include LAND OF OZ, MOON KING, SUMMER MOON, DIOCLECTIAN and DUBWAI FIFTY. It is going to take a fair bit of head-scratching to come up with the winner here and I don't expect to finalise mine until Tuesday morning.

Keith's final choice

16:40 LAND OF OZ 8/1 each way – Some of these runners may be looking for a hurdle to jump. I am going with Sir Mark Prescott's Australia colt LAND OF OZ who is a proven stayer winning six handicaps last term at up to 2m 2f. Should see out this trip and made a pleasing return at Chelmsford last week when second.

How it fared

LAND OF OZ had every chance with a furlong to go but didn’t quicked and faded to sixth

Keith went for an each way selection of Mengli Khan at 13/2 when advised.

What our members tipped in the Ascot Stakes

Each day we ask our members to select their Pick 6, their NAP for each race of the day.  We then collate all the picks, and present the top selections to our VIP members.  Here's how it went for the Ascot Stakes in 2019 (the race did not feature in 2020):

Race Five | 5:00pm – Ascot Stakes

Impressive record for Mullins and Moore in this and that looks to have helped shape your votes here with 20.4% of you on M C MULDOON.

COUER DE LION and CAPE GENTLEMAN the next best with 9.5% apiece.

The Ascot Stakes did not feature in our Pick 6 promotion in 2020

Coeur De Lion pips Mengli Khan here with just over 20% of the votes.  Buildmeupbuttercup another contender with 10% of the votes.

Our Verdict:

Despite being through to the front of the field, Mengli Khan couldn’t stay there for long and finishes mid division. Buildmeupbuttercup was last marker for much of the race, before engaging into the race at around a quarterof a mile out. Topweight The Grand Visir holds off Buildmeupbuttercup to give trainer Ian Williams his first Royal Ascot win under Richard Kingscote.
