History of the Ascot Gold Cup race at Royal Ascot

First run in 1807, the Gold Cup was originally open to horses 3 years and over.

An interesting fact is that the 1844 race was attended by Nicholas I of Russia, who was making a state visit to England. Czar Nicholas offered a new trophy for the race the “Emperor's Plate” and this became the title of the event for a short period. Its original name was restored in 1853, during the Crimean War.

Lester Piggott is the Gold Cup's most successful jockey, with a phenomenal eleven wins between 1957 and 1982.

The leading trainer is Aidan O’Brien who has recorded seven wins so far, four of them with the fantastic YEATS. YEATS remains the most successful horse of the Ascot Gold Cup, with none beating it’s four wins.

What's Our Ascot Gold Cup Tips for Royal Ascot?

We've been studying the cards, form, stats, trends and more for the Ascot Gold Cup at Royal Ascot, and here's our thoughts ahead of the race:

The Gold Cup inevitably centres on whether Stradivarius can make it four in a row and equal the record set by Yeats, who won this race from 2006-2009. He returned at the end of April to win the Sagaro Stakes in comfortable fashion and is not scheduled for another run before the Gold Cup. The horse stays really well and has a fantastic turn of foot over a staying trip and it’s a deadly combination that nobody has been able to live with for the last 3 years. At a best price of 6/4 it does not appear to be a price worth getting stuck into, so it is worth looking for some each way value further down the market.

Mark Johnston heads the opposition, with Subjectivist and Sir Ron Priestley both offering single figure prices in the race. Subjectivist took a big step forward with a career best at Meydan in March, winning the Dubai Gold Cup really well by six lengths. He stayed on over the 2-mile trip and there could be more to come stepping up to 2m 4f here. Sir Ron Priestley has returned after coming second in the 2019 St Leger, winning two races this season so far at Nottingham and Newmarket. Both were won fairly comfortably and being a strong stayer as well, Mark Johnston has an exciting prospect here.

Of the others near the front end of the market, Trueshan did beat Stradivarius last October at Ascot, but the ground was soft to heavy on that occasion. That suited Trueshan much more than Stradivarius and it will again need a remarkable amount of rain in the build up to Royal Ascot for Trueshan to come into the reckoning. If the ground is the usual good summer ground, however, then I would not be rushing to back Trueshan at single figure odds. Also, Ocean Wind has been held on numerous occasions by the horses at the top of the market and Tiger Moth will surely need a little more progress to usurp Stradivarius.

We generally get at least 8 runners going to post for the Gold Cup, and at the prices currently available, both Subjectivist and Sir Ron Priestley hold each way value at 6/1 and 8/1 to oppose Stradivarius. The narrow price of Stradivarius is fully justified, of course, but it’s hard to get too excited at such firm odds and these two horses certainly have positive each way prospects.

Our Antepost Bet:

  • 1pt each way Subjectivist
  • 1pt each way Sir Ron Priestley

On the day:

TRUESHAN 4.15 – Ascot (7/2) – Stormed clear to win the Long Distance Cup here in October, with Stradivarius having an off-day, and returned with an encouraging run behind Japan in the Ormonde at Chester. It will all depend on whether Stradivarius can emulate the mighty Yeats and land a fourth Gold Cup.

Originally billed as a rematch between dual Gold Cup winner and peoples favourite STRADIVARIUS and KEW GARDENS who lowered his colours in the Long Distance Cup on Champions Day but KEW GARDENS has since been scratched. There are still plenty of questions that need answering though, is STRADIVARIUS as good as he was at around 4/7 the betting market confidence is high? What about the other leading contender's TECHNICIAN, CROSS COUNTER, and NAYEF ROAD. I have my eye on an each-way option to take STRADIVARIUS  but a lot will depend on race day conditions. Sun is forecast for gold cup day, lets hope they have got it right.

Keith's final choice

15:35 NAYEF ROAD 16/1 each way – Every fibre of my body screams STRADIVARIUS will win his third Gold Cup but at 4/5 the value is poor. Mark Johnston's Dee Ex Bee ran him close three times last season earning us a bit of place money in the process. NAYEF ROAD is another Johnston inmate, he galloped strongly to win the Sagaro at Newcastle 2 weeks ago and is cracking each-way value at 16/1.

How it fared

NAYEF ROAD 2ND 16/1 (ADV) – WOW!! What a fantastic race, NAYEF ROAD took the race by the scruff of the neck and attempted to make all and without the machine STRADIVARIUS in the race, he would have done, but, when Frankie Dettori pressed the accelerator on the champion it was game over as the STRADIVARIUS landed his third Gold Cup by a wide margin. NAYEF ROAD himself was 8 lengths ahead of the field but 10 lengths behind the winner. WOW!!

To be certain of getting Keith's final thoughts on every Royal Ascot race, make sure you have joined the FRT VIP Club.

This is what Keith said about the 2019 Ascot Gold Cup:

Leading Contenders
STRADIVARIOUS 13/8 – Dominated the staying division last season winning five from five and it will take something special to knock him off his perch, but the opposition look stronger this year. Won his prep race at York.
CROSS COUNTER 9/2 – Impressive CV, three wins from four at Group Level. Finished off last season with victory in the Melbourne Cup and started this season with a win in the Dubai Gold Cup.
DEE EX BEE 6/1 – Second in the Derby was definitely his best run last season. The step up to two miles brought out the best in him and he won the Sagaro here with some authority and followed up in the Henry II at Sandown has put him firmly in the picture to this race.
KEW GARDENS 12/1 – St Leger winner, seventh in the Arc only four lengths behind Enable. Won the Queen’s Vase at last year’s Royal Ascot in a faster time than STRADIVARIOUS the year before. Second on unsuitable going at Chester last time.

Readers of our Ascot Flyer will know that my original selection was KEW GARDENS each way and I still believe he will be involved but the way that DEE EX BEE 6/1 each way has been running this season is impressive and I think that is where the value lies.

Who is our Antepost Tipster for Royal Ascot?

Our Royal Ascot Antepost tips is brought to you by one of our panel of professional tipsters.  Meet Aaron Gibbons who runs the AG Tips service on Tipsterr.

Aaron is a professional horse racing tipster specialising mainly in UK and Irish horse racing. I use my own methods to price up horse races independently and compare those prices against the market to identify the best each way value. I launched my AG Tips service on Tipstrr back in June 2019, since when I have provided over 1400 selections that have produced an overall long-term profit of 335 units, equating to a 23.5% ROI.

What our members tipped in the Ascot Gold Cup

Each day we ask our members to select their Pick 6, their NAP for each race of the day.  We then collate all the picks, and present the top selections to our VIP members.  Our members picked these for the Ascot Gold Cup:

Race Four | 4:15pm – Ascot Gold Cup

Feature race of the day and week, with all eyes on STRADIVARIUS and no surprises here that he has the lion's share with 50% of the selections.
He could become only the second horse to win four Gold Cup's but it's TRUSHAN that could get in the way of that record.  There's 20.5% of you seeing Stradivarius getting beat here.
SUBJECTIVIST the only other possible danger from your selections.

A huge 55% of you on Frankie Dettori and Stradivarius but not much value here in the betting. Nayef Road and Moonlight Spirit had some early support, but next best is Technician with 10.5% of the selections.

No guessing who gets the lion’s share of the votes, with Stradivarius way out in front with almost 60% of the votes.  Dee Ex Bee the nearest contender with 21.7% of the votes.

Royal Ascot Ascot Gold Cup Results

3 Master Of Reality 66/1

Our Verdict:

It nearly didn’t happen for Stradivarius as he got blocked in until a furlong out, but as space opened up, and Dettori asks for effort, Stradivarius delivers, taking the Ascot Gold Cup from Dee Ex Bee who led for much of the race. Our members and our Tipster both agreed to form the forecast – Stradivarius and Dee Ex Bee leaving plenty of punters happy with that result.
