When is The British Champions Long Distance Cup 2020?

The Qipco British Champions Long Distance Cup is the opening race of British Champions Day.

The Qipco British Champions Long Distance Cup takes place on Saturday 17th October 2020 with the race starting at 1.20pm at Ascot Racecourse

British Champions Long Distance Cup is a Group 2 race run over 2 miles and is open to horses aged 3 years and older.  The race was formally known as the Jockey Club Cup and prior to 2011, it was run at Newmarket.  It now forms part of the British Champion Day, where it is the long distance final for the British Champion Series.

This year's prize money is £300,000

Further Flight is the most successful horse of all time, having won this race (in it's previous incarnation) a whopping 5 times in 1991-1995.  The leading Jockey is Sir Gordon Richards winning 7 times.  The leading trainer was that of Further Flight, who also went on to win with Rainbow High (1999) and Tastahill (2010) for 7 wins.

The fastest time for the race (since 2011) is Fame and Glory, ridden by Jamie Spender and trained by Aiden O'Brien, who in 2011 completed the race in 3:26:50.

British Champions Long Distance Cup Tips

This year's British Champions Long Distance Cup is a tricky affair with no horse ticking every box.

The Favourite STRADIVARIOUS is well drawn in stall 1 but that 7th place in the Arc is against him as is his age to a certain extent.

The next in the betting market SEARCH FOR A SONG is out of the favoured draw of stalls 1 to 4 and being a filly that is against her too.

One that may go well at a price is SOVEREIGN who was beaten favourite, 6th behind Search For A Song in the Irish Leger but has form on this softer going, a decent draw and could bounce back.

How Did We Do?

Keith's message to VIP Members on raceday was:

SOVEREIGN 13:20 Ascot 11/1 each way – I would absolutely love STRADIVARIUS to win this but I feel he is vulnerable, he comes here off the back of two hard races over an inadequate distance and his record in this race reads third, won, second. My feeling is that the value lies with SOVEREIGN, last years Irish Derby winner who ran well behind Enable in the King George prior to a poor effort in the Irish St Leger. He is well drawn and will have no problem with the soft going.

SOVEREIGN tracked the leaders and briefly went second when ridden over 2f out, he stayed but had no extra inside final 110yds finishing fifth just over a length behind  the second horse home. Nothinh got close to the winner TRUSHAN who was a further 7½ lengths in front after scooting clear under Hollie Doyle.

Keith will have a tip for all races shown on ITV which he will send to all VIP members on the morning of the races.  If you are not yet a VIP member, please join VIP for free.
