St Leger 2026 ante-post betting
There's still plenty that can change before the final declarations, but the ante-post market is already beginning to take shape.
At the time of writing, Christmas Day, Enceladus and Pierre Bonnard are the three horses at the head of the betting.
Christmas Day
It's hardly surprising to see Christmas Day towards the top of the St Leger odds, currently around 13/8.
The Aidan O'Brien-trained colt won the 2026 Derby at Epsom, before finishing runner-up in the Irish Derby.
He was beaten by Maltese Cross in the Great Voltigeur at York on his latest appearance, but that certainly hasn't ended his St Leger hopes.
The question now is how he'll cope with the step up to almost 1m7f at Doncaster.
Aidan O'Brien's recent St Leger record certainly doesn't hurt his case either. He's won the previous three renewals and will be bidding for his tenth St Leger victory in total.

Enceladus
One of the more interesting names to have moved towards the head of the market is Enceladus, around 11/4.
Trained by Joseph O'Brien, he's now challenging the Ballydoyle runners in the betting and is one to keep a particularly close eye on as Doncaster approaches.
There's still time for the market to move significantly, but his current position suggests he's being taken very seriously.

Pierre Bonnard
Then there's another strong contender from Aidan O'Brien's yard in Pierre Bonnard, sitting around 5/2.
He was well fancied for the Derby earlier in the season and subsequently finished third in the Irish Derby.
Ballydoyle's strength in depth means we'll have to wait and see exactly which horses eventually line up at Doncaster, but Pierre Bonnard is currently among the shortest-priced runners in the market.
Given O'Brien's extraordinary recent record in the race, he's another horse who warrants plenty of attention.

Are there any bigger-priced St Leger contenders?
This is where the ante-post market becomes particularly interesting.
There are several horses sitting at considerably bigger prices behind the leading three.
Del Maro is currently available at around 10/1 in the wider market, while Hatteen is around 16/1.
Go further down and horses including Galiyan, Highwayman and Piazza San Marco can be found at 20/1 or higher (at the time of writing).
At those sorts of prices, the potential each-way angle becomes more appealing – but there's an important catch with ante-post betting…
You're betting before the final field is known.
If your horse doesn't ultimately run, traditional ante-post rules will usually mean your stake is lost, so it's always worth checking the bookmaker's terms before placing a bet.

Can Christmas Day complete the Derby-St Leger double?
This could become one of the biggest stories heading into Doncaster.
Christmas Day has already won the Derby, and victory at Town Moor would see him complete the famous Derby-St Leger double.
It's a combination that has become increasingly rare in modern racing.
The St Leger demands something different from the Derby. Doncaster's extended 1m6f trip puts far more emphasis on stamina, and there's always the possibility that a horse brilliant over a mile and a half simply won't be as effective over the extra distance.
Christmas Day therefore has the form and the trainer, but his ability to handle the St Leger trip will be one of the key questions in the build-up.
Who will win the 2026 St Leger?
There's plenty still to happen before we reach Doncaster on 12th September.
Final declarations could change the complexion of the race completely, while the ground at Town Moor will inevitably become another major consideration closer to the day.
For now, Christmas Day, Enceladus and Pierre Bonnard are the three obvious horses to watch towards the front of the market.
But with some potentially interesting runners available at much bigger prices, we'll also be watching for any value further down the St Leger betting.

When is the St Leger Festival 2026?
The St Leger Festival returns to Doncaster from Thursday 10th to Sunday 13th September 2026, culminating in one of the biggest races of the British Flat season.
And this isn't just any St Leger…
The 2026 St Leger marks the 250th anniversary of the world's oldest Classic, which was first run in 1776.
Four days of racing at Town Moor build towards the Group 1 St Leger on Saturday afternoon, with some excellent supporting races along the way.
The main event, the Group 1 St Leger Stakes, takes place on Saturday 12th September.
It's the fifth and final British Classic of the season and is run over 1 mile, 6 furlongs and 115 yards, making stamina a crucial part of the test.
And there will be plenty to watch before Saturday arrives.
Thursday 10th September – Ladies Day
The first day of the Festival features two notable Group 2 races.
The May Hill Stakes is a mile contest for two-year-old fillies and has an impressive roll of honour. Previous winners include Inspiral and Desert Flower, while Aylin won the race in 2025.
There's also the Park Hill Stakes, sometimes referred to as the fillies' St Leger because it's run over the same extended 1m6f distance.
Santorini Star won the 2025 Park Hill Stakes, getting the better of Consent in a close finish.
Friday 11th September – Doncaster Cup Day
Friday's headline attraction is the Group 2 Doncaster Cup, one of Britain's major staying races.
We've seen some seriously good stayers win it over the years, including Stradivarius and Trueshan.
More recently, Sweet William has made the race his own, winning it in both 2024 and 2025.
The Flying Childers Stakes is another of Friday's highlights, but at the opposite end of the distance spectrum. This Group 2 is a five-furlong dash for two-year-olds, with Revival Power taking the prize in 2025.
Saturday 12th September – St Leger Day
Saturday is the big one.
The card also features the Group 2 Champagne Stakes and Group 2 Park Stakes, but everything builds towards the 2026 St Leger Stakes.
The race has been dominated by Aidan O'Brien in recent years.
Continuous won for O'Brien in 2023, Jan Brueghel followed in 2024 and Scandinavia completed three consecutive victories for Ballydoyle in 2025.
O'Brien now has the opportunity to make it four in succession – and, unsurprisingly, he has a strong hand in the 2026 ante-post market.
Sunday 13th September – Sunday Funday
The Festival concludes with another seven-race card on Sunday.
It's a more relaxed finale after the intensity of St Leger Day, bringing four days of racing at Town Moor to a close.
