One of the biggest sprint handicaps of the season is almost here, with the 2026 Ayr Gold Cup taking place on Saturday 19th September.
And if you're looking for an early bet, the ante-post market is already getting interesting.
There's still a large field of potential runners and plenty can change before the final declarations, but we've taken an early look through the Ayr Gold Cup odds to find two horses that stand out…

Our main pick: Thunder Call
Current price: around 9/1–10/1
Thunder Call has shot towards the head of the market following an impressive victory at Ascot last weekend.
The three-year-old had already been knocking on the door in some competitive sprint handicaps, finishing third at Newmarket in July before taking second over 6f at Ascot in August.
But he took another significant step forward back at Ascot on Saturday, winning a valuable handicap by 2¾ lengths.
Admittedly, that latest success came over seven furlongs rather than the Ayr Gold Cup's six.
However, his previous performances over 6f suggest dropping back shouldn't be an issue, and he's clearly a sprinter heading in the right direction at exactly the right time.
There is obviously a risk attached to backing any horse ante-post while the final field remains uncertain, but Thunder Call looks one of the most interesting contenders at this stage.

Each-way pick: Evening Saigon
Current price: around 12/1
At a slightly bigger price, Evening Saigon also makes plenty of appeal.
His standout performance this season came at Glorious Goodwood, where he landed the Stewards' Cup over six furlongs at odds of 16/1.
That's obviously an attractive piece of form heading into another fiercely competitive six-furlong handicap.
He wasn't able to follow that up with another victory at York, finishing fifth in the Constantine Handicap, but that doesn't suddenly wipe out what he achieved at Goodwood.
With around 12/1 available at the time of writing, he's one we'd rather have on our side than ignore.

Who is favourite for the Ayr Gold Cup 2026?
At the time of writing, Binhareer is the Ayr Gold Cup favourite at around 8/1, with Thunder Call immediately behind him in the betting.
Binhareer certainly has the profile to be competitive.
The William Haggas-trained four-year-old finished second in a huge 22-runner handicap at York in May before running sixth of 27 in the Wokingham Stakes at Royal Ascot.
He was then fourth in the Group 3 Hackwood Stakes at Newbury.
That means he's dropping back into handicap company having been competing at Group level, although a price of around 8/1 in a race as competitive as this doesn't leave an enormous amount of room for error.

Behind the leading pair, horses including Far Above Dream, Evening Saigon, Red Spells Danger and Completely Random feature prominently in what remains a very open market.

What should you look for in an Ayr Gold Cup winner?
The Ayr Gold Cup is a very different proposition to a small-field conditions race.
It's a six-furlong Heritage Handicap featuring a huge field of sprinters, where things such as the draw, pace and going can have a significant impact.
There are some interesting historical trends too.
Nine of the last 12 winners have been aged between four and six, while nine of those 12 carried 9st 5lb or less.
All 12 had also raced within the previous 49 days, while nine had previously won at least twice over six furlongs.
But one of the biggest pieces of information won't arrive until much closer to the race.
The draw for the 2026 Ayr Gold Cup takes place on Thursday 17th September, when connections select stalls for the 25 runners that make the final Gold Cup field.
That's something we'll be paying particularly close attention to before making our final selections.
When is the Ayr Gold Cup 2026?
The 2026 Ayr Gold Cup takes place on Saturday 19th September at Ayr Racecourse.
It's the headline event of Scotland's biggest Flat racing meeting, with the three-day Ayr Gold Cup Festival running from Thursday 17th to Saturday 19th September.
The Gold Cup itself is run over six furlongs and is one of Europe's most valuable sprint handicaps.
Last year's renewal went to Run Boy Run at 12/1, who beat Desert Falcon and Jubilee Walk for trainer Richard Spencer and jockey George Wood.
Run Boy Run is among the entries again in 2026 and is currently available at a considerably bigger price than the market leaders.
Ayr Gold Cup Festival 2026 preview
There's much more to the meeting than Saturday's big handicap, with three days of racing at Ayr.
Thursday 17th September – Opening Day
The Festival gets underway on Thursday, with the Kilkerran Cup the feature contest.
This valuable handicap is run over approximately 1m2f and has developed a reputation for attracting some useful middle-distance handicappers.
It's a relatively gentle start before the quality ramps up considerably on Friday and Saturday.
Friday 18th September – Ladies Day
Friday features three of the meeting's notable races.
The Ayr Bronze Cup provides an opportunity for sprinters that don't make the cut for either Saturday's Gold or Silver Cups.
There are also two Listed contests on the card.
The Harry Rosebery Stakes is a five-furlong race for two-year-olds, while the Arran Scottish Sprint Fillies' Stakes gives the fillies and mares their chance over the same minimum distance.
Saturday 19th September – Ayr Gold Cup Day
Saturday is comfortably the biggest day of the meeting.
The Ayr Silver Cup acts as the consolation race for horses that narrowly miss out on a place in the Gold Cup itself.
There's also the Firth of Clyde Stakes, Scotland's only Group race, and the Listed Doonside Cup.
The 2025 Doonside Cup was won by Almeric for Andrew Balding and Oisin Murphy, while the Silver Cup went to Candy.
Candy's victory was the start of a remarkable afternoon for jockey George Wood, trainer Richard Spencer and owner Phil Cunningham.
Just over an hour later, they struck again when Run Boy Run won the Ayr Gold Cup itself at 12/1, completing a memorable Silver Cup-Gold Cup double.

There's still enough time for the picture to change before Saturday 19th September.
The final field, draw and ground could all have a major bearing on the race, so we'll reassess things once we know exactly what we're dealing with.
But at this stage, Thunder Call is our main ante-post pick.
His victory at Ascot last weekend suggests he's coming into the race in excellent form and, despite shortening in the betting, there's still enough in his price to make him interesting.
