Stayers Hurdle TipsWhen is the Stayers Hurdle 2023?

Cheltenham Thursday 16th March 3.30pm

Stayers Hurdle (Grade 1) (4yo+)

Distance: 3 miles

Weights:  11st 0lbs (4yo), 11st 10lbs (5yo+), 7lb allowance for fillies and mares

The feature race on Thursday, the third day of the festival is the Stayers Hurdle, run over three miles of the new course where they must clear 12 hurdles. Formally known as the World Hurdle, this is the pinnacle event for staying hurdlers and often produces a dramatic finish up the hill.

It is a genuine staying event and all the contenders will know they’ve had a race by the end of it.

Who are the Stayers Hurdle Leading Contenders?

Thursday’s card contains an exciting renewal of the Stayers Hurdle. Although Flooring Porter has been victorious in each of the last two years, this is a race which isn’t averse to throwing up a big-priced winner. Lisnagar Oscar’s unlikely 2020 victory at 50/1 is one of the more notable shocks in recent seasons, however, there have also been a couple successes at 12/1 and 10/1 since 2017.

Although only two favourites won in the last decade, Home By The Lee’s place towards the top of the market is perfectly understandable. This horse has twice chased home Flooring Porter and clearly enjoys the undulations of Prestbury Park. Flooring Porter is also likely to return and will be aiming to complete a hat-trick, however, the 8-year-old is winless in almost 12 months.

Last year’s Champion Hurdle loser Teauphoo is likely to go off as favourite, and with eight wins from his first 11 appearances plus a recent success in the Grade 2 Galmoy Hurdle at Gowran Park, it gives him a good chance to enjoy success on March 16th.

Paisley Park is also likely to return for this race, however, the 11-year-old may be past his best. This race has been dominated by horses aged six and seven, so it would be an unlikely victory for the veteran performer.

At the time of writing the Stayers’ Hurdle has thirty-three entries, many of which are entered in other races too. I had to check that last year’s winner Flooring Porter is only a seven-year-old as he appears to have been around longer. A year ago, he was winning a Gowran Park handicap off a mark of [122] and finished the season rated [164] a meteoric improver. Not a lot has gone right for Gavin Cromwell’s star hurdler this season, he fell on his seasonal return in the Lismullen Hurdle at Navan in November and was then a victim of a farcical start in the Christmas Hurdle at Leopardstown. It looked like a false start, and the eventual winner Klassical Dream gained several lengths advantage. That run can be excused and marked-up, he had most of the Irish protagonists in behind him including Sire De Burlais, who was pulled-up on that occasion. He was runner-up at Cheltenham last year. It is interesting that he has qualified for the Pertemps Final, a race he won in consecutive years in 2019 and 2020. In claiming the stayers crown last March, Flooring Porter defeated the two previous champions, Paisley Park and Lisnagar Oscar (fell). Both of those represent the British form and both appear to have peaked, I can’t see either of them as candidates for glory this year. Thyme Hill was popular in the market for the 2020 renewal but had to miss the race. He will have his supporters once again, but I tend to steer clear of unlucky horses. He has had some bad luck in the past but is developing a habit of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. Thyme Hill was second in the Long Walk Hurdle at Ascot before Christmas, and I can’t see him reversing that form with the winner Champ. Nicky Henderson’s gelding was to be targeted for the 2022 Gold Cup, but due to setbacks and lack of suitable chases, he was given a seasonal debut over hurdles. Paddock watchers observed that Champ was in need of the run at Ascot, and yet he could not have been more impressive. There is still a question mark over which engagement he will take up in March. I expect him to go for the Stayers’ crown. He went into last year’s Gold Cup off the back of an interrupted campaign and pulled-up early and I expect his connections will be keen to avoid a repeat. Champ has reached veteran status having only six chase starts. The son of King’s Theatre has not completed a chase beyond two miles since winning the 2020 RSA. He possibly only has the Denman Chase and Cotswold Chase as suitable options before the festival, and I expect him to stick to the smaller obstacles. Connections already have Chantry House as a Gold Cup contender.

PAISLEY PARK – Winner of this race in 2019 but struggled in last year's renewal when seventh, he lost 2 shoes during the race which could explain the poor run. Back to his best when winning the Long Walk hurdle last time staying on well.

THYME HILL – Has some decent form at Cheltenham and beat PAISLEY PARK at Newbury before going down by a neck to that rival last time.

SIRE DU BERLAIS – Dual festival winner of the Pertemps Final Network Handicap Hurdle. Won a Grade 2 in November.

BENIE DES DIEUX – Runner up in last year’s Mares Hurdle.

What’s Our Stayers Hurdle Tips?

As the name of the race suggests, stamina is the name of the game. This three-mile contest hasn’t been a happy hunting ground for favourites in recent years with just one market principal having scored since Thistlecrack’s 2016 victory. The pace of this race can often catch out several newcomers and it often takes a certain type of performer to prevail in this unique contest.

Although Teauphoo is the favourite, following his exploits elsewhere, he is unproven at this track and didn’t enjoy its only previous visit to Gloucestershire. Home by the Lee has looked quite convincing lately, however, he lost by over seven lengths to Flooring Porter in this contest last season. Nevertheless, this horse could be older and wiser this time around.

Blazing Khal is interesting, but we haven’t seen this horse in action since 2021, so it might be worth backing Gold Tweet. The 6-year-old came over from France and was excellent at this course at the end of January in a Grade 2. Although this is harder, that appears to be an excellent prep run.

Pick – Gold Tweet – 8/1

Our Antepost tips for the Stayers Hurdle:

Champ – 1 point win @ 9/2 (Hills; 7/2 Bet 365 NRNB)

Flooring Porter – 0.5 point each-way @ 11/2 (several firms)

BENIE DES DIEUX is immediately crossed out due to the poor record of mares in the race, also she is more likely to run in the Mares Hurdle again. SIRE DU BERLAIS has earned the right to a crack at this race but may find one or two too good.

Basically this race could boil down to a match between THYME HILL and PAISLEY PARK who are honours even this season with a win apiece. My trusty pin is hovering over THYME HILL as my ante-post selection, his younger legs may just prevail from the late challenge of PAISLEY PARK up that Cheltenham Hill.

To be sure to find out who Keith selects on the morning of the race, join our VIP Club

On the day we told our VIP Members PAISLEY PARK 15:05 Cheltenham 2/1 – With THYME HILL injured serious contenders in this race are now thin on the ground. Won this in 2019 and reportedly lost 2 shoes when disappointing last year, back at his best at Ascot when nailing THYME HILL on the line, it is a shame we wont get to see a rematch today.

How did we do?

PAISLEY PARK was held up towards rear, headway out wide before 2 out, ridden chasing leaders between last 2, outpaced before last, kept on well run-in, went 3rd towards finish.

Here is what Keith wrote for the 2020 Stayers Hurdle.

With CHAMP expected to continue chasing and be aimed at the RSA Insurance Novices Chase and BENIE DES DIEUX likely to try and regain her Mares Hurdle Crown this race is going to cut up badly.

It is a shame really as to my mind BENIE DES DIEUX is the one most likely to get close to PAISLEY PARK.

CITY ISLAND would have to show a remarkable return to form to be competitive here and SUMMERVILLE BOY is held by PAISLEY PARK on their January meeting.

My selection for the Stayers Hurdle 2020 is:  PAISLEY PARK 10/11 (NRNB) who is as near to a festival banker as you are likely to see.

As this article is written in advance of the 2020 Cheltenham Festival, the likely contenders are expected to change as we get closer to St Patricks Day. The picture also starts to get much clearer as we approach the festival, with trainers starting to show their cards in the weeks leading up to Day 3.

On the day, Keith chose Paisley Park, however, we saw another odds on favourite turned over when PAISLEY PARK was unable to produce his trademark late run, it was reported he had lost two shoes during the race.
