When is the Martin Pipe Handicap Hurdle 2020?

Cheltenham Friday 13th March 5.30pm

Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys Handicap Hurdle (4yo+)

Distance: 2 miles 4 furlongs

Weights:  Handicap

The final race of the Cheltenham Festival is the Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys Handicap Hurdle. It is run over a distance of about two miles and four and a half furlongs, and during the running there are nine hurdles to be jumped.

The event was established in 2009 and is named in honour of Martin Pipe. During his career, Pipe was champion trainer 15 times and his record at the Cheltenham Festival included 34 victories.

This is a race that David Pipe, Martin Pipe’s son would love to win but so far it has eluded him.

What’s Keith’s Martin Pipe Handicap Hurdle Tips for 2020?

Here is Keith’s tip for the 2020 Martin Pipe Handicap Hurdle.

Twenty seven races in the bag, and it could come down to this final event to decide who is the festival champion trainer, although I expect Willie Mullins will have it sewn up by then.

While Mullins will likely have a runner or two in the race (BLACKBOW is one possible), the horse I am looking forward to lining up on the day is trained by his chief rival.

Gordon Elliott’s COLUMN OF FIRE has a nice progressive profile, having won his maiden at Punchestown in January with some authority, he went on to Leopardstown and finished second on his handicap debut.

My selection for the Martin Pipe Handicap Hurdle 2020 is: COLUMN OF FIRE 9/1 each way (NRNB).

As this article is written in advance of the 2020 Cheltenham Festival, the likely contenders are expected to change as we get closer to Cheltenham Gold Cup Day. The picture also starts to get much clearer as we approach the festival, with trainers starting to show their cards in the weeks leading up to Day 4.

What was Keith’s Martin Pipe Handicap Hurdle Tip for 2019?

Last year, for the 2019 Martin Pipe Handicap Hurdle, Free Racing Tips Tipster Keith advised:

Like many of these big handicaps, we have no idea which horses are going to turn up on the day, but currently the ante-post market is headed by DALLAS DES PICTONS, and as his trainer Gordon Elliott has taken the honours in the last two years, I would say he has every chance.

URADEL, trained by Willie Mullins, looks to have been targeted here too, but the horse I favour is the Joseph O’Brien trained RHINESTONE.

My selection RHINESTONE 12/1 each way, ninth in last year’s Champion Bumper has taken well to hurdles just missing out on a grade 1 win at Leopardstown in February.

Result: RHINESTONE was a Non Runner

On raceday Keith advised DEFI BLEU 14/1 each way who stayed on to take 3rd place.
