Mares Novices Hurdle TipsWhen is the Mares Novices Hurdle 2023?

Cheltenham Thursday 16th March 4.50pm

Festival Mares Novices Hurdle (Grade 2) (4yo+)

Distance: 2 miles 1 Furlongs

Weights: 10st 8lbs (4yo), 11st 2lbs (5yo+)

Penalties: 5 lb for winners of Class 1 wfa hurdle, 3 lb for winners of Class 2 wfa, 3 lb for winners of Class 1 handicap hurdle

The penultimate race on day three is registered as the Dawn Run Mares Novice Hurdle but now that Tattersalls is the sponsor the official title is “National Hunt Breeders Supported By Tattersalls Mares Novices Hurdle”, this was inaugurated in 2016 and it is a novice hurdle open to fillies and mares aged four years old or over.

It is run on the new course over a distance of about two miles and one furlong with eight hurdles to be jumped, winners of this will likely compete in the Mares Hurdle in future years.

Mares Novices Hurdle Trends and Statistics

Who are the Mares Novices Hurdle Leading Contenders?

Willie Mullins has won all but one of these renewals and ALLEGORIE DE VASSY can see the Closutton maestro back in the winners’ enclosure.

Useful in France prior to joining this yard the No Risk At All mare is 2-2 over hurdles since joining the Mullins operation, equipped with a tongue-tie for the first time when scoring impressively at Fairyhouse on New Years’ Day and easily following up when tried in a Grade Three contest at the same venue where she had stablemate Brandy Love beaten by some three lengths.

The runner-up didn’t jump particularly well and hung noticeably to her left throughout so will be better suited going this way round; but she has a bit to do with the selection on the back of that performance and she might do well to reverse the form.

The winner and tip the race did the job nicely, always travelling well and jumping fluently; while she showed a good burst of speed between the final two obstacles to put the race to bed. She’s sure to improve further and every chance she can maintain her perfect record for the Mullins team.

ANTE-POST SELECTION: ALLEGORIE DE VASSY

PRINCESS ZOE – Group 1 winner on the flat in France, as yet unraced over hurdles.

SHEWEARSITWELL – Unbeaten over hurdles including a Grade 3 at Tipperary in October

ROSEYS HOLLOW – Progressive over hurdles landed a Grade 3 at Fairyhouse last time.

ROYAL KAHALA – Runner up to ROSEYS HOLLOW at Fairyhouse giving weight away.

What’s Our Mares Novices Hurdle Tips for 2022?

An interesting race to be sure.  PRINCESS ZOE is an enigma and if she can jump the obstacles will be a shoo in. SEWEARSITWELL is trained by the maestro Willie Mullins who a;so handles 10 more of the entries, which ever ones remain on raceday merit consideration. ROSEYS HOLLOW may not be as good off level weights which gives a squeak to ROYAL KAHALA.

On the day we told our VIP Members HOOK UP 16:15 Cheltenham 7/1 each way – Now in its sixth year Willie Mullins has won all 5 renewals of this race. He has a strong hand again today and HOOK UP is marginally preferred. Of the non-Mullins contenders ROYAL KAHALA and ROSEYS HOLLOW have to be respected.

How did we do? Hook Up was held up and always towards rear, never on terms finishing in 12th place.

Here is what Keith wrote about the 2020 Mares Novices Hurdle.

With this race having only been around for the last four years, we do not yet have the in-depth statistics and trends that I like to study and uncover the hidden gems, as I can with the other races at the Festival.

The claims of Willie Mullins are hard to ignore having won all four renewals, and he is likely to saddle the ex-French LAMARCKISE, who has won on her only start in Ireland.

There is a stronger contender likely to be lining up in the race though, the Henry De Bromhead trained MINELLA MELODY, who is three from three over hurdles, including the Grade 3 Solerina at Fairyhouse in January. Leading narrowly before the last, she extended her advantage on the run up to the line in the capable hands of Rachael Blackmore.

My selection for the Mares Novices Hurdle 2020 is: MINELLA MELODY 3/1 (NRNB).

How did his selection do? MINELLA MELODY went form traveling well to being eased right down after being headed before the last in the Mares Novices Hurdle.
