Ballymore Novice Hurdle TipsWhen is the Ballymore Novice Hurdle 2023?

Cheltenham Wednesday 15th March 1.30pm

Ballymore Novices Hurdle (Grade 1) (4yo+)

Distance: 2 Miles 5 Furlongs

Weights: 10st 12lb (4yo), 11st 7lb (5yo+), 7lb allowance for fillies and mares

The first race on Ladies Day is the Ballymore Novices Hurdle, formally known as the Neptune Hurdle. It is a grade one race and open to horses aged four years old and older, run on the old course over a distance of about two miles and five furlongs putting the emphasis more on stamina than in the Supreme on Tuesday. There are ten hurdles to be negotiated.

Winners of the race have been known to dominate the hurdling ranks for years to come.

Recent winners include The New One in 2013 and Faugheen in 2014, who went on to win the Champion Hurdle the following year. Irish trained runners have won seven of the last twelve renewals, with four of them being trained by Willie Mullins.

Who are the Ballymore Novices Hurdle Leading Contenders?

This contest has been an Irish benefit in recent years and that dominance of the Wednesday Festival opener can continue with GINTO who can follow the likes of Envoi Allen and Bob Olinger who have trodden the same route to Festival success.

Gordon Elliott’s charge took the recent Lawlor Of Naas Hurdle to maintain his unbeaten record over hurdles, showing true determination to land the victory having faced a strong challenge from the turn but eventually running out a ready victor.

He might not have been best suited though to having force the pace and his earlier Navan victory from Eric Bloodaxe was impressive where he travelled strongly off the lead and there’s certainly more to come from him with further improvement anticipated.

He’s shown he can handle good and soft ground and as a point-to-point winner he’ll get further in time. He looks a really good prospect and following Envoi Allen and Bob Olinger – both winners of that Naas race before going on to win at the Festival – he is one to be interested in in the Wednesday opener although he also holds an entry for the Albert Bartlett Hurdle.

ANTE-POST SELECTION: GINTO

Here's what Keith said ahead of the race:

BRAVEMANSGAME – Top of his game, won the Grade 1 Challow Hurdle at Newbury

BOB OLINGER – Grade 1 winner at Naas in January on heavy going.

APRECIATE IT  –  Champion Bumper runner up in 2020, looked good when winning the Paddy Power futute champions at Leopardstown in December.

GAILLARD DU MESNIL – Plenty of scope, eased down when winning a Leopardstown Grade 1 last time.

What are Our Ballymore Novices Hurdle Tips?

We will update this box with our tips for the Ballymore Novices Hurdle when they are finalised

There are too many variable to come up with a solid selection at this moment in time, 120 horses are entered and a maximum of 22 will go to post.

All 4 horses in the leading contenders list merit consideration but at this stage I have a slight preference for GAILLARD DU MESNIL.

On the day, here is what Keith told our members:

BOB OLINGER 13:20 Cheltenham 15/8 – Extremely impressive when winning a Naas Grade 1 in January and can follow up in this. GALLARD DU MESNIL and BRAVEMANSGAME are respected too.

How did he do?

BOB OLINGER – got us underway with our first win of the day!  Bob Olinger raced keenly, held up in close 5th, headway into 2nd before 4th until 4 out, chased leaders, switched out and 2nd again before 2 out, challenged going well 2 out, led before last, 5 lengths ahead last, quickened further clear run-in, impressive win!

FRT Tipster Keith’s wrote this for the 2019 Ballymore Novices Hurdle Tips

A bigger question than what am  I tipping here is what is actually  going to run.

Like many of these horses, ENVOI  ALLEN holds multiple entries  and even though he is ante-post  favourite for this race he is a viable  option for the Champion Hurdle,  a race trainer Gordon Elliott has  never won. That said, he has a  favourites chance here.

ASTERION FORLONGE, although  bred for further, has never raced  beyond 2 miles and is more likely  to be aimed at the Supreme  Novices Hurdle.

THE BIG BREAKAWAY stays this  far and may have place chances.  Lack of experience is likely to be

the downfall of THE BIG GETAWAY  in this company.

Proven over course and distance,  THYME HILL ticks plenty of boxes  in this race and has a big each  way shout. Let’s hope connections  send him here. If he does, however  go for the Albert Bartlett, then my  alternative is ENVOI ALLEN 5/4.

Result: Day 2 at Cheltenham began in some style when ENVOI ALLEN recorded an easy win in the Ballymore Novices Hurdle.
