Please note the day and/or time of this race has been changed for 2020

Newmarket Saturday 6th June 2020 at 3.35pm
2000 Guineas (Group 1)
Age: 3yo only,
Distance:1m
Prize: £250,000

History of the 2000 Guineas

Established five years before the 1000 Guineas, the 2000 Guineas was named after the original prize funds for the race.  The first run was on 18 April 1809, the 2000 Guineas is open to 3 year olds (excluding geldings) and is run over a mile.

As one of the Classics, it’s one of our most prestigious flat races, with horses often coming from the Greenham Stakes and the Craven Stakes to race.  The race itself is often seen as a trial for the Derby, later in the season.  The 2000 Guineas makes up part of the Great Britain Triple Crown races, along with the Epsom Derby and St Leger Stakes.

When it comes to leading trainers, then Aidan O’Brien holds the crown with 10 wins, most recently Magna Grecia last year.  The leading Jockey however, has 9 wins but, you have to go back to the 1800’s to find Jem Robinson, the last win being in 1848.

There is also a stand out owner for the 2000 Guineas, who has won the race 11 times over the past 23 years – many of which is thanks to Aidan O’Brien who trained them – and that’s Sue Magnier.

What's Keith's 2000 Guineas Tips for 2020

This year’s renewal revolves around last year’s champion two-year-old PINATUBO who is an absolute monster of a horse and finished last season uneaten including a fine Royal Ascot win for us in the Chesham Stakes. PINATUBO ended the season with a two-length win over Aiden O’Brien’s ARIZONA in the Dewhurst Stakes over 7 furlongs here at Newmarket. ARIZONA is the current second favourite. Charlie Appleby is sure to have got PINATUBO spot on for this belated renewal of the 2000 Guineas and as he finished last season with an official rating of 128 a full ten pounds higher than the nearest challenger.

It will come as no surprise to you that PINATUBO is Keith’s 2020 selection for the 2000 Guineas.
