What's Our Queen Mary Stakes Tips for Royal Ascot?

We've been studying the cards, form, stats, trends and more for the Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot, and here's our thoughts ahead of the race:

The Queen Mary Stakes looks set to be yet another competitive 2-year old sprint with a number of future superstars set to line up on the second day of Royal Ascot.

Wesley Ward has a terrific record in this race and the US trainer has another strong hand in 2021. He’s won three of the last six renewals and he has another short-priced contender in Ruthin. This filly won over 5f at Keeneland in April and Ward is unlikely to send her all the way to Berkshire if he doesn’t believe that she can win this. Ward also sends Twilight Gleaming to this track.

Tenebrism is an interesting rival, having won on debut at Naas. The horse who finished third that day (Lord Gorgeous) has gone on to win again so the form has been franked.

Recent history suggests sticking with the US shippers and having won at Keeneland (the US track that is most often compared to European courses), Ruthin fits the bill here.

To be certain of getting our final thoughts on every Royal Ascot race, make sure you have joined the FRT VIP Club.

On the day:

TWILIGHT GLEAMING 2.30 – Ascot (9/4) – We can’t not back at least one of Wesley Ward’s runners at the meeting and I think this filly looks his best chance of a winner. She hosed up at Belmont Park on her second start and to win over 5f so easily in a sub – 56.5 seconds time, means that she must be something special. Ward has won this race three times in the past 6 years and if TG can continue running how she did when last seen then I think she’ll be very hard to beat on similarly quick ground.

Yet another race where the draw is pretty vital. The top fancies are American raider CAMPANELLE who has Frankie booked to ride, O’Brien’s MORE BEAUTIFUL, SACRED and HAPPY ROMANCE make up the first four in the market.

Keith's final choice

MORE BEAUTIFUL 13:15 Ascot 6/4  – Ridden clear when recording a comfortable debut win at Naas should scoot home from the plum draw providing Ryan Moore gets on with it.

How it fared

MORE BEAUTIFUL 9th / 18 – Disappointing run Ryan Moore never really got her stoked up. Great win by Frankie on the winner running on what was perceived to be the slower part of the course after being drawn in 1

To be certain of getting Keith's final thoughts on every Royal Ascot race, make sure you have joined the FRT VIP Club.

This is what Keith said about the 2019 Queen Mary Stakes:

Leading Contenders
CHASING DREAMS 9/2 – Made a winning start to her career with a maiden win at Newmarket in April scooting clear by five lengths.
LADY PAULINE 8/1 – American raider trained by Wesley Ward who loves to get winners at the meeting. Won by almost ten lengths on her debut over four and a half furlongs. Beaten into second place at Ascot on 1st May.
ICKWORTH 8/1 – Game filly has won both her starts in Ireland latterly a listed event at the Curragh. Has the scope for improvement but will need to if she is going to win this.
DIVINE SPIRIT 8/1 – Easy winner at Windsor when odds on in what looked a pretty ordinary novice. May be up against it in this tougher company.

My selection for the race is LADY PAULINE 8/1 each way this half-sister to Lady Aurelia, a dual winner at Royal Ascot for Ward. Can be forgiven her May defeat as she hadn’t had long to acclimatise, and it was her first turf run.

On the day LADY PAULINE was a non-runner so Keith went for ICKWORTH 8/1 each way – Godolphin have a strong hand in this and my each way pick is ICKWORTH who won a Listed race at the Curragh last time pretty comfortably on yealding ground.

What our members tipped in the Queen Mary Stakes

Each day we ask our members to select their Pick 6, their NAP for each race of the day.  We then collate all the picks, and present the top selections to our VIP members.  Here's how it went for the Queen Mary Stakes:

It's the favourite TWILIGHT GLEAMING that gets the bulk of the selections here in the first of Day Two with a fairly convincing 28.8%.

Desert Dreamer (11%) and Quick Suzy (8.2%) the best of rest.

It’s that man Ryan Moore again here on Admiral Nelson with 31.6% of your Pick 6+2 selections. Qaader next best with 25% and Lauded the only other of note from the rest.

It might be the first race of the day, but all eyes are on Final Song for this with over 27% of the votes – Divine Spirit with just over 15% and Ickworth in third with 13.3%.

Our Verdict:

Raffle Prize and Kimari battle it out to the finish line, with only a head in it, Raffle Prize under Dettori takes the honours. The favourite Final Song was just a length behind them which will have disappointed our members, of which 27% picked Final Song.

Keith’s each-way selection ICKWORTH refused to race, thankfully most bookmakers refunded the stake money.
