When is the Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot 2022?

Royal Ascot Thursday 16th June at 2.30pm
The Norfolk Stakes (Group 2)
Age: 2yo
Distance: Five furlongs
Weights – 9st 1lb (3lbs allowance for fillies)
Prize: £100,000

History of the Norfolk Stakes race at Royal Ascot
The Norfolk Stakes was first run in 1843. Originally named the New Stakes, the race was renamed the Norfolk Stakes in 1973. This was to honour the 16th Duke of Norfolk, who served as the Queen’s Representative at Ascot from 1945 to 1972. It was promoted to a Group 2 race in 2006 and is now part of the Breeders Cup Challenge, where winning this race qualifies you to participate in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint in Kentucky in November.

The most successful jockey has been Lester Piggott with nine wins between 1961 and 1992.

Records for the leading trainer reach back to the annals of history. Four trainers share the leading trainer’s crown with four wins Mathew Dawson, James Ryan, John Porter and Atty Persse. They all plied their trade, either in the nineteenth century or the early part of the twentieth century.

On the day:

SECOND WIND 2.30 – Ascot (11/1 each way) – Made a winning start in professional style at Yarmouth and then showed improved form to follow up under a penalty at Salisbury (5f) just 19 days ago. In excellent hands and should go on improving.

A good race for the fancied runners and the market leaders are again the ones to be studying. Mark Johnston and been very bullish about EYE OF HEAVEN. GOLDEN PAL, LIPIZZANA and THE LIR JET head the opposition.

Keith's final choice

EYE OF HEAVEN 14:25 Ascot 7/4 – Mark Johnston has been very bullish about this colt who looked good when winning on debut at Newmarket and should show significant improvement for that run.

How it fared

EYE OF HEAVEN 9th – Broke well enough from the stalls but didn't appear to like the going. Eased when beaten.

To be certain of getting Keith's final thoughts on every Royal Ascot race, make sure you have joined the FRT VIP Club.

This is what Keith said about the 2019 Norfolk Stakes:

Leading Contenders

PISTOLETTO 11/2 – Two wins from two. Was a game winner at Naas in May, met plenty of trouble in running and stayed on really well under pressure despite being bumped.

MONARCH OF EGYPT 6/1 – Pushed clear on debut and clearly has plenty more to offer.

VENTURA REBEL 13/2 – Unbeaten colt. Won over course and distance at the beginning of May beating the speedy American raider LADY PAULINE

MAVEN 7/1 – Trained in the USA by Wesley Ward. Once raced winner on the tight course at Aqueduct. Will find Ascot very different.

My selection for the race is PISTOLETTO 11/2, who would have won more clearly last time with a clear passage.  However the only runner out of Keith’s Antepost selections was VENTURA REBEL – advised at 13/2 and drifted to 16/1

What our members tipped in the 2019 Norfolk Stakes

Each day we ask our members to select their Pick 6, their NAP for each race of the day.  We then collate all the picks, and present the top selections to our VIP members.

Race One | 2:30pm – Norfolk Stakes

It's CADAMOSTO that just edges it here for the AP O'Brien/Ryan Moore combo with 22.7% of your selections.
Next best is NAKATOMI which has drifted in the markets out to 12/1 currently – with 21.1% of the selections it could be one to watch.  GO BEARS GO the only other worthy of a mention.

Our Verdict
A’Ali made a show at 2 furlongs out, and managed to clinche the win from an ever pressing Ventura Rebel, who looked strong to win, if only there was a few feet more. The consolation is that Keith’s selection, advised at each way, drifted from it’s early price of 13/2 all the way out to 16/1 so lots of value to be had at your Best Odds Guaranteed Bookies. The members favourite Sunday Sovereign faded after being amongst the front runners at the start to finish in 8th place from 13 runners.
