History of the Hampton Court Stakes race at Royal Ascot

The race has been run under several different names over the years, and for a while it was known as the Churchill Stakes. In 2011, to commemorate the 300th anniversary of Ascot racecourse it was called the Tercentenary Stakes. It reverted to Hampton Court Stakes, in 2017, which of course, it’s named after the King Henry VIII’s residence.

Ryan Moore has ridden four winners of the race since 2009.

The most prolific trainer in recent years has been Aidan O’Brien with four wins since 2003.

The pair teamed up to win in 2020 with RUSSIAN EMPEROR.

What's Our Hampton Court Stakes Tips for Royal Ascot 2022?

We've been studying the cards, form, stats, trends and more for the Hampton Court Stakes at Royal Ascot, and here's our thoughts ahead of the race:

This Group 3 event for the 3-year olds which has produced a number of short priced winners.
Six of the last eight winners of this race have started the day in the top two of the betting and this year’s odds are suggesting that Derby nearly-ran
Mohaafeth is the horse to beat. William Haggas’ charge may not have taken part in the Epsom spectacle, however, he’s won each of his last three outings including a superb 5 length success in the Newmarket Stakes at the beginning of May.

Sir Michael Stoute has won two of the last seven renewals of this contest and he saddles second favourite Maximal who has been the runner-up in each of his last two appearances. His only success came in a class four Novice Stakes at Sandown, and this may prove a step too far.

Charlie Appleby’s One Ruler has been keeping good company and he has finished sixth in both the Derby and the 2000 Guineas. He struggled over 12f and this 10f may be more to his liking.

Roger Varian’s Movin Time is unexposed and was last seen winning a Maiden Stakes event by four lengths. Sticking with the favourite Mohaafeth may be the best option and he’ll be raring to go after missing the Derby.

On the day:

MOHAAFETH 3.05 – Ascot (7/4) – Took a huge step forward when making it 3 for 3 for the year in listed contest at Newmarket last month, easily accounting for Secret Protector. Ought to take a good deal of stopping.

Just 8 runners declared and as this race tends to favour those at the head of the market we can strike out half of them. The winner should come from JUAN ELCARNO, FIRST RECEIVER, RUSSIAN EMPIRE and BERLIN TANGO. My choice will be revealed on Wednesday morning when I have more idea about the forecast going and likely weather conditions.

Keith's final choice

13:50 RUSSIAN EMPEROR 3/1 – Unlucky loser at Leopardstown last time when he didn't enjoy a clear passage may just have a bit in hand over this field.

How it fared

RUSSIAN EMPEROR 100/30 Won – Held up and came with a late run to get up in the closing stages

Keith tipped Sangarius as an 8/1 each-way shout for the Hampton Court Stakes.  He wasn’t able to find any selections at antepost, so this was his advice to our members.

What our members tipped in the Hampton Court Stakes

Each day we ask our members to select their Pick 6, their NAP for each race of the day.  We then collate all the picks, and present the top selections to our VIP members.  Here's how our members have voted:

Race Two | 3:05pm – Hampton Court Stakes

Jim Crowley looks the man to steer MOHAAFETH home here after an impressive 5l win at Newmarket last month.   A whopping 54.5% of you on that.

ONE RULER the only really of note with 18.2% and MOVIN TIME a possible each way shout with 11.4% of your selections.

She might not be there but there’s plenty of support for the Queen’s horse, First Receiver, with just over 30% of the selections here. Russian Emperor up there too though with 24.7% of your selections. Berlin Tango is on a shade over 12% of the votes.

Fox Chairman pips Cape of Good Hope here with 24.2% for the Pick 6 selections, with Frankie Dettori’s Sangarius receiving 10% of the votes

Our Verdict:

Whilst the majority of our members favoured Fox Chairman, 10% did select Sangarius to win the Hampton Court Stakes, and Frnakie Dettori ensured they weren’t disappointed. Winning in fantastic style, Sangarius beat the favourite by 2¼ lengths. Taking Keith’s early price of 8/1 would have been a great choice, as odds shortened to 13/2.
