History of the Duke of Cambridge Stakes race at Royal Ascot

Originally the Windsor Forest Stakes, this race was established in 2004 for older fillies and mares as an incentive to keep them racing. In 2014, the race was renamed the Duke of Cambridge Stakes in honour of Prince William, Duke of Cambridge.

In its relatively short history, the Duke of Cambridge Stakes has heralded three jockeys who have won the race twice each, Wayne Lordan, Ryan Moore, and William Buick.

The Leading Trainer is Sir Michael Stoute with four wins the most recent being INTEGRAL in 2014 under Ryan Moore.

What's Our Duke of Cambridge Stakes Tips for Royal Ascot?

We've been studying the cards, form, stats, trends and more for the Duke of Cambridge Stakes at Royal Ascot, and here's our thoughts ahead of the race:

This mile contest is always one of the trickiest contests on day 2 of Royal Ascot and with the pre-race favourite having only obliged in three of the last 12 renewals, it’s often advised to look beyond the market leader.

However, William Jarvis’ Lady Bowthorpe does look a strong contender for this year’s renewal and she was last seen coming second in the Lockinge.
Sir Michael Stoute has a good record in this race and
Queen Power, who finished behind Lady Bowthorpe at Newmarket is perhaps more effective over a slightly longer trip.

However, Andre Fabre’s Queen of Love is an exciting unknown quantity and having won both its trips over the mile, and beaten a subsequent winner (in a listed race), this could be the one to power home in Berkshire.

To be certain of getting our final thoughts on every Royal Ascot race, make sure you have joined the FRT VIP Club.

On the day:

LADY BOWTHORPE 3.40 – Ascot (9/4) – There was a lot to like about how LADY BOWTHORPE pulled clear of the remainder when runner-up to Palace Pier in the Lockinge Stakes at Newbury last month and she can take advantage of this good opportunity back against her own sex.

Horses at the head of the market tend to shine in this race and the ones to concentrate on are Newcastle Listed winner NAZEEF, JUBILOSO who has Group 3 placed form, Miss O'CONNOR Group 2 winner last Autumn and LAVENDERS BLUE.
Keith's final choice

16:10 NAZEEF 100/30 – My initial selection for this race was going to be MISS O CONNOR but she was scratched this morning so I had to have a rethink. I narrowed it down to JUBILOSO and NAZEEF but plumped for the latter because of the good recent win which was cosier than the bare result suggests.

How it fared

NAZEEF Won – Swooped late got up on the line but the photograph was just a formality the result was never in doubt.

To be certain of getting Keith's final thoughts on every Royal Ascot race, make sure you have joined the FRT VIP Club.

This is what Keith said about the 2019 Duke of Cambridge Stakes:

 Leading Contenders

I CAN FLY 3/1  – Second to ROARING LION in the Queen Elizabeth II on Champions Day in October that was on soft going. Only win this season has come on the All Weather at Dundalk. Struggled in top company since both in Meydan and at Newmarket in the Lochinge. Will be better if there is rain.

VERACIOUS 3/1  – Group 3 winner last season. Shaped up like she needed the run first time out this season in the Dahlia Stakes at Newmarket. Will strip fitter for the run and should be involved.

RAWDAA 7/2  – Was handicapping last season but has stepped up to Class 1 races this year. Gave LAH TI DAH a scare when chasing her home in the Group 2 Middleton at York. Further progression will put her right on the premises in this.

PRETTY BABY 6/1  – Has won back to back Group 3 races over seven furlongs. Goes on any going. Every chance if handling this extra furlong.

Despite the lack of a Group race win the stand out filly in this race for me is RAWDAA 7/2. She is sure to improve again after that fine run behind LAH TI DAH at York.

What our members tipped in the Duke of Cambridge Stakes

Each day we ask our members to select their Pick 6, their NAP for each race of the day.  We then collate all the picks, and present the top selections to our VIP members.  This is our member's selection for the Duke of Cambridge Stakes:

Lady Bowthorpe and Queen Power look to be the ones to battle it out here, and it's LADY BOWTHORPE that wins the battle on Pick 6 with 34.2%.

Queen Power next best with 21.9% and Champers Elysees in third with 12.3%.

The final race of our Pick 6, and the penultimate of the day, sees quite a mixed bag of selections, but Jim Crowley’s ride Nazeef gets the nod here with 23.7%. Jubiloso and Magic Lily pretty much neck & neck for 2nd and 3rd place with 15% of the selections each.

21% of our members believed I Can Fly can fly during this race and pipped Rawdaa (17.4%) and Pretty Baby (16.3%).

Our Verdict:

Favourite, I Can Fly stayed at the rear of the field but left itself too much to do come the finish line. Move Swiftly made a claim for the race 7 furlongs out, and fiercely fought for the win in the race from Keith's tip Rawdaa who came a very close second. I Can Fly finished in third, but was well beaten. Our members favoured I Can Fly, so was left disappointed by Ryan Moore’s ride which could have seen a different outcome, if not seemingly held up at the back for so long.

Watch Move Swiftly battle for first place in the Duke Of Cambridge Stakes at Royal Ascot in 2019:
