What's Our Coronation Stakes Tips for Royal Ascot?

We've been studying the cards, form, stats, trends and more for the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot, and here's our thoughts ahead of the race:

The fillies go to post for the Coronation Stakes and the form lines to follow generally for this race is the English and Irish 1,000 Guineas.

Mother Earth heads up the market at 4/1 after having won the 1,000 Guineas at Newmarket last week. She was given a fantastic ride by Frankie Dettori on the day, but going off at an SP of 10/1 she was definitely Aiden O’Brien’s second string behind the much fancied Santa Barbara, who went to post as 5/2 joint favourite.

Santa Barbara is next in the market at 5/1 and given how well she was supported last time you would have to favour this horse going forward. They ran a little green in the closing stages of the Guineas and will definitely learn a lot as it was only their second ever racecourse appearance.

Pretty Gorgeous is next at 7/1 best price and hasn’t been seen since beating Mother Earth back in October last year at Newmarket in the Bet365 Fillies Mile. She was entered in the 1000 Guineas but unfortunately pulled out due to an unsatisfactory scope. Her 2-year-old career has brought three successes on soft ground but she finished twice on better ground, and all of those combined factors would appear to count against her at the current prices.

Saffron Beach has to be respected at a current best price of 8/1, given her second place in the Guineas and she finished the race really well too. It was her first try over a mile and her pedigree indicates she’s a miler, so there should be more to come at this distance.

Fev Rover has to be given a mention after finishing third in the Guineas, but ultimately she was held by the front two and did start the race at an SP of 22/1. Producing a similar run in the Coronation seems a stretch reduces even her eachway appeal at her current price of 12/2. Joan of Arc has also been recently backed after winning the Irish 1000 Guineas trial at Leopardstown on Sunday. Some firms have gone as short as 5/1 which is arguably an overreaction, and Aiden O’Brien definitely has stronger fancies in this race in Mother Earth and Santa Barbara.

Snow Lantern was impressive winning over a mile in April at Newbury and Richard Hannon is very excited about this filly. She is the daughter of Sky Lantern, who won the 1,000 Guineas and the Coronation Stakes back in 2013 so the pedigree is definitely there.

At the prices, Santa Barbara still carries each way value at 5/1, and she should come on for the run in the Guineas, giving her more potential than perhaps any other horse in the race. Saffron Beach also appeals at 8/1 each way, also on the basis of her strong performance in the Guineas when she kept on really well towards the end. That was her first start over a mile and she should progress further, too.

Snow Lantern could be a lively contender, but judgement should perhaps be reserved until we see how she gets on at York this week first before getting involved.

Our Antepost Bet:

  • 1pt each way Santa Barbara
  • 1pt each way Saffron Beach

On the day:

ALCOHOL FREE 4.20 – Ascot (10/1 each way) – A generally progressive filly who landed the Cheveley Park last year. Only fifth to Mother Earth in the 1000 Guineas last time and no obvious reason to think she'll reverse the form.

A proper quality race is in prospect with 1000 Guineas 3rd QUATRILATERAL heading the market. RUN WILD and CLOAK OF SPIRITS and SHARING are also fancied.

Keith's final choice

14:25 CLOAK OF SPIRITS 13/2 – Finished ahead of today favourite QUADRILLATERAL when they bumped to something special in the 1000 Guineas and is the value option in the race.

How it fared

CLOAK OF SPIRITS 5TH – Tracked leader, led two furlongs from home, weakened inside the final furlong when headed.

To be certain of getting Keith's final thoughts on every Royal Ascot race, make sure you have joined the FRT VIP Club.

This is what Keith said about the 2019 Coronation Stakes:

Leading Contenders
QABALA 4/1 – Won the Nell Gwyn at Newmarket over seven furlongs in April but was found wanting in the 1000 Guineas when finishing fourth behind HERMOSA.
HERMOSA 5/1 – Won the 1000 Guineas on first start this season. May need further in time.
JUBILOSO 7/1 – Unraced at two but has made up for lost time winning twice including an impressive seven length victory over seven furlongs.
CASTLE LADY 8/1 – Godolphin owned French raider. Unbeaten in three starts but may find conditions too quick at Ascot.

This race looks ideal for the progressive JUBILOSO 7/1 each way. This mile trip will be well within her scope.

What our members tipped in the Coronation Stakes

Each day we ask our members to select their Pick 6, their NAP for each race of the day.  We then collate all the picks, and present the top selections to our VIP members.  Here's how it went for the Coronation Stakes:

It's MOTHER EARTH that's out there in front here with 33.3% of your selections.
PRETTY GORGEOUS the next best with 16.7% and the only other worthy mention is ALCOHOL FREE.

Ryan Moore gets the nod here on More Beautiful with a big 30% of the selections. Campanelle the best of the rest with 13.9% and Sacred way back in third with 8.7% of the selections.

AP O’Brien and Ryan Moore look all set to claim the Coronation Stakes with Hermosa and that’s who almost 60% have gone with!   Real mixed bag behind Hermosa, with only Jubiloso standing out.

Royal Ascot Coronation Stakes Results 2019

3 Mother Earth 9/2

1 Alpine Star 9/2
2 Sharing 16/5

1 Watch Me 20/1
2 Hermosa 1/1F
3 Jubiloso 9/2
9 ran NR: Mot Juste Distances: 1½l, 1l, 1l

Our Verdict:

An impressive finish by 20/1 outsider WATCH ME meant that the evens favourite, and our members favourite HERMOSA was denied victory by a length and a half. Keith’s pick, JUBILOSO finished up a length adrift for 3rd place, taking the each way for some profit, only if you caught the price when advised at 7/1 as Jubiloso shortened into 9/2 and the each way value disappeared.
