What's Our Commonwealth Cup Tips for Royal Ascot?
We've been studying the cards, form, stats, trends and more for the Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot, and here's our thoughts ahead of the race:
The Commonwealth Cup looks a tricky puzzle to solve at this stage with 53 runners currently having entries for the race. It’s currently a case of figuring out where the horses will go and what will be their main targets, either here or elsewhere.
Campanelle is the current market favourite at a best price of 7/1, and as this is their only entry at Royal Ascot we can be pretty sure that this is their targeted race for the meeting. He won the Queen Mary Stakes last year at Ascot as a 2-year-old in impressive fashion over five furlongs, since when further success in the Darley Prix Morny at Deauville over 6f last August in Group 1 company rightfully puts him towards the front of the market. A fourth place at Keeneland over a mile at the Breeders Cup meeting in November added to his reputation, but the sprint trips are definitely his optimum distance at present.
Alcohol Free is also entered in the Coronation Stakes over a mile as well as this race and it’s hard to make a case for the horse to win this renewal. Considering he went off at 5/2 favourite for the Guineas last week shows faith in this horse over the longer trip, so the Coronation Stakes is likely to be the preferred option.
Supremacy would have been high on the agenda for this race and did start the Pavilion Stakes as 10/11 favourite at the end of April. However, a dead last finish followed by a subsequent revelation of a ‘less than perfect’ blood test result casts some doubt as to whether he will be 100% for this race in a month’s time.
One horse that does catch the eye is Dragon Symbol for Archie Watson. He is unbeaten in 4 starts after winning three times over six furlongs on the all-weather and won last time out on his turf debut at Hamilton over five furlongs. That last win was particularly impressive, pulling imperiously clear of the opposition in the final furlong and looking like a potential star of the sprinting division. Andrew McNamara was quoted after the race as saying ‘He’s going to win a big one very soon, hopefully. It’s not every day you get to ride one like that’. They are entered in the Kings Stand also, but the jockey did say they are more likely to go for the Commonwealth Cup which would probably be the best option, and give him excellent each way value at 10/1.
Our Antepost Bet:
- Dragon Symbol 1pt each way
On the day:
CAMPANELLE 3.40 – Ascot (7/2) – Won at the meeting last year. She then backed that up with an easy victory in Deaville before finding a mile a bit too far in a hot fillies’ group 1 at The Breeders Cup, behind the likes of 1000 Guineas winner ‘Mother Earth. She’s back over the 6f trip tomorrow and with Frankie booked, and from a much kinder draw in stall, she looks to have every chance of making it two from two.
Keith's final choice
15:35 MILLISLE 10/1 each way – Dropped back to 6 furlongs after disappointing over a mile in the 1000 Guineas. Fully expected to bounce back to form.
How it fared
MILLISLE 5TH – Ran well from a bad position first home of the far side runners. GOLDEN HORDE took the race.

This is what Keith said about the 2019 Commonwealth Cup:
Leading Contenders
CALYX 6/4 – Unbeaten colt. Quickened clear over course and distance in the Commonwealth Cup Trial. Will be hard to beat.
TEN SOVEREIGNS 4/1 – Dropping back to six furlongs after disappointing over a mile in the 2000 Guineas. A repeat of his win in the Middle Park Stakes last year will put him right there at the finish.
JASH 14/1 – Three wins from four. Only defeat was at the hands of TEN SOVEREIGNS in the Middle Park. Won over seven furlongs on return, may find this trip a bit on the sharp side now.
BULLETIN 14/1 – American raider. Won his first three races including a black type event at Keenland. Turned over at 1/10 last time at Churchill Downs.
Antepost Tip: This race revolves around CALYX 6/4 and he should win with some authority. This horse subsequently didn’t run in the Commonwealth Cup.
On the day Keith tipped TEN SOVEREIGNS to win, however the odds were very short.

Finishing 4th, Perfect Ten which set off as evens failed when asked to make the effort by Ryan Moore with 1 furlong to go, and remained in 4th place.
