History of the Albany Stakes race at Royal Ascot

A fairly recent addition to Royal Ascot. First run in 2002 when it was called the Henry Carnarvon Stakes, named after the recently deceased former Racing Manager of Her Majesty the Queen Henry Herbert, the 7th Earl of Carnarvon. In 2003, it’s name changed to the Albany Stakes which in 2005 was promoted to a Grade 3 race.

The most successful jockey so far has been Jamie Spencer with four wins, the most recent being in 2013.

Mick Channon is the most successful trainer, having saddled three winners to date. His last was Samitar ridden by leading jockey Jamie Spencer in 2011.

What's Our Albany Stakes Tips for Royal Ascot?

We've been studying the cards, form, stats, trends and more for the Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot, and here's our thoughts ahead of the race:

The Albany Stakes is another fillies contest and there is another high quality line-up for 2021.

Simon and Ed Crisford’s Flotus is the favourite for this year’s contest and having stylishly won a fillies’ stakes event at Goodwood in mid-May, she is understandably popular.

Wesley Ward has never won this particular race, but he sends another couple of interesting contenders in Averly Jane and Golden Bell.

At a bigger price, it may be worth looking at Hermana Estrella, who won on debut and beat a number of previous winners in the process.
It’s a big step up, but against a number of unknown quantities, anything is possible.

To be certain of getting our final thoughts on every Royal Ascot race, make sure you have joined the FRT VIP Club.

OSCULA 2.30 – Ascot (7/1 each way) – It's been a busy and productive first month for Oscula, was caught close home on debut at Kempton a month ago, but has since enjoyed back-to-back successes at Brighton and Epsom, both with room to spare. A favourable draw and a clear run should set her up for a strong challenge today, too, especially as she won't mind the rain that is forecast before the off.

I am expecting to be taking on the market leaders MOTHER EARTH and FLYING ALTHEA and at the moment I am looking at last time out winners SETARHE, UNDERTAKE and GOLDEN MELODY.

    Keith's final choice

13:50 UNDERTAKE 16/1 each way – This filly is available at unbelievable odds. Her win at Lingfield, while not earth-shattering, was still pretty encouraging and she is certain to progress.

    How it fared

UNDERTAKE 4th – Ran a good race just missed out on third in the closing stages.

To be certain of getting Keith's final thoughts on every Royal Ascot race, make sure you have joined the FRT VIP Club.

This is what Keith said about the 2019 Albany Stakes:

ETOILE 5/1 – Won a Group 3 on debut at Naas running on well. Expected to progress significantly for the run.
FINAL SONG 7/1 – Won her maiden here on soft clear by five lengths. Every chance if handling quicker conditions.
PEACE CHARTER 10/1 – Won her maiden but was second to ETOILE in that Naas Group 3.
SO WONDERFUL 16/1 – Still a maiden has finished behind both ETOILE and Peace Charter.
Keith chose the Aidan O’Brien trained filly ETOILE 5/1 has the best form on offer and is my selection for this race, however Etoile didn’t end up racing, and Keith’s replacement was LAST SURPRISE as an each way shout.

What our members tipped in the Albany Stakes

Each day we ask our members to select their Pick 6, their NAP for each race of the day.  We then collate all the picks, and present the top selections to our VIP members.

Frankie Dettori looks to be the one to kick Day Four off with FLOTUS the pick of your Pick 6 selections today with 29.4% of your selections.

Next best is HELLO YOU with 23.5% and OSCULA the only other worthy mention with 17.6%.

It’s David Egan’s ride, Daahyeh, which heads the selections in the first race with 26.8% of the voting.  Closest behind this is Frankie’s ride, Last Surprise with 10.3% and Galadriel with 8.7%.

    Our Verdict:

No surprise that our members favoured the winner, and it was risky for Keith to go against the crowd, but he does always like to find value for our members in his tips – however, LAST SURPRISE really was a surprise as he finished in last place out of 25 runners!
