What is a patent Bet?
There are a number of ways to bet in horse racing of course, and you’ll often hear people talking about a Patent, but you might not know exactly what this is.
Well, don’t worry, we’re here to explain all for you, so here goes.
With a patent you select 3 horses the bet consists of 7 bets: 3 singles, 3 doubles and a treble.
Each selection appears in 1 single, 2 doubles and a treble.
If you successfully pick 3 winners in a patent the returns multiply considerably.
For example 3 winners all at 3/1 returns £124 a nice little profit of £117.
It’s similar to a Lucky 15 but you are covering 3 selections not 4.
As you’re placing seven bets, your stake is multiplied by seven a £1 patent costs £7.
If you manage to pick three winners, you’ll see some cracking returns, but it’s always worth making sure you’re getting some decent value.
Two winners generally returns a good profit.
Any one winning choice from the patent is enough to generate a return – this is considered to be one of the main advantages over a trixie which also covers 3 selections but does not include the singles.
