Friday 25th September, 3.05pm, Newmarket
The Shadwell Rockfel Stakes is one of the big races coming from Newmarket on Friday afternoon and this Group 2 should be a cracker. It’s a seven furlong encounter open to fillies aged two-years-olds. It wouldn’t be a surprise if plenty of these ended up in the 1,000 Guineas here on the Rowley Mile next year and many trainers will be looking to get some course form in the book here.
Hugo Palmer has the favourite in the shape of Hawksmoor, who is a 9/4 shot and won at Goodwood last time out in the Group 3 Prestige Stakes.
That was on Soft ground and the horse does look to handle a bit of cut in the ground. She was sixth of seven on the July Course on quicker ground, but wasn’t beaten all that far and should put in a big performance here.
The filly is improving and looks the one to beat.
Doubly Motivated is next in the betting at around the 4/1 mark and runs for Charlie Hills.
This horse managed to win at Lingfield on Good ground last time out and was second by just ¼ length on debut on the July Course last month.
It was an eight length victory from the filly last time out and she gave every indication she could be above average on that day. An improvement is of course needed here, but the horse should put in a big performance.
Promising Run goes for Saeed Bin Suroor and James Doyle and is at 9/2 in the betting.
She won on similar ground over at the July Course last time out on what was the horse’s second start. You’d think there’s still a lot to come from this filly and the victory last time out was impressive.
Ryan Moore is back in the saddle now and he rides Thetis for Sir Michael Stoute, who is a 6/1 shot and another looking to improve on a second-start victory.
It’s then 8/1 about Great Page, 16/1 for Flying Empress and 28/1 for Justice Angel.
For us, the best bet in this one is Hawksmoor and she could be tough to beat.
