Friday 25th September, 3.40pm, Newmarket
The Shadwell Joel Stakes is the fourth race coming from Newmarket tomorrow on the second day of the Cambridgeshire Meeting. This is a Group 2 held over a distance of one mile and it should be a good race, despite there only being four runners.
The race seems to be all about Time Test, who could not have been much more impressive than when winning over a mile and two furlongs at Royal Ascot in June.
The horse was then perhaps a little disappointing in the Juddmonte International at York, but takes a drop down in both trip and class here.
The ground shouldn’t be a problem over this shorter trip and Roger Charlton has secured the services of Ryan Moore, who won on the horse at Newbury back in May.
If you’re looking for a horse that ticks plenty of boxes, then this three-year-old doesn’t leave many blank and the 5/6 on offer could prove to actually be quite generous.
The big danger to Time Test, though, is Custom Cut. David O’Meara’s charge landed a Group 2 last time out over in Ireland and looks right back to his best in that one.
He is the only course and distance winner in the field and despite having to give weight away, this horse does have to have a big chance. He’s as game as they come and will be a real challenger to the favourite.
Decorated Knight is at 13/2 and although he’s wonm his last two, you might just think that Roger Varian’s charge could be a little bit out of his depth hre.
Tupi is the outsider at 16/1.
For us, this isn’t the most appealing betting heat, but if forced to have one, we would just side with Custom Cut at the prices.
