Saturday 14th November, 2.25pm, Cheltenham
The big race coming from Cheltenham tomorrow is the Paddy Power Gold Cup Chase. This is a Grade 3 Handicap held over two miles and four furlongs and there’s £160,000 in prize money up for grabs, so it’s a valuable race.
20 runners will head to post for this year’s renewal and it is as competitive as ever.
David Pipe has the favourite in the betting right now with Kings Palace currently a 7/1 shot.
This horse won three of his four races last season, albeit in small fields and when odds-on. He was then a disappointing sixth in the RSA Chase at the Cheltenham Festival when last seen, but reports from this yard is that the horse has improved over the summer.
He has struggled a little bit in bigger fields, but could be off a good handicap mark and has every chance of taking the spoils here.
You then have Boondooma at 9/1 for Dr Richard Newland and Will Kennedy. This horse was impressive when winning well here last month and he set a very good gallop on that day.
To keep that gallop up and win in what was a competitive race was impressive and this horse could still have plenty more improvement.
Irish Cavalier at 10/1 for Rebecca Curtis and Paul Townend and this horse is a course and distance winner after winning by two and a half lengths at the Festival back in March. He seemed to love coming up the Cheltenham Hill.
Paul Townend comes over to ride the six-year-old and he looked to be as good as ever when winning comfortably at Newton Abbot last time out. He’s clearly been aimed at this race and has the class to give weight to some of his main rivals.
This talented grey shouldn’t be far away.
Another course and distance winner is John’s Spirit, who took this race two years ago and can be backed at 12/1 right now.
He was pulled-up in the Old Roan Chase on seasonal reappearance, but was desperately unlucky in that race and got badly hampered. He’s sure to now be prepped and ready for this encounter and Richie McLernon gets a great tune out of this horse. He’s got a big chance.
Art Mauresque is a 12/1 shot for last year’s winning trainer Paul Nicholls. Sean Bowen takes the ride on this five-year-old, who was really impressive when winning over course and distance last time out.
He surprised Nicholls on that day and was well beaten by Irish Cavalier at Newton Abbot, but could still have a fair bit more to show us.
Trainer David Pipe also has Monetaire here at 12/1 and this horse likes Cheltenham and also enjoys a big field. He has a pretty low weight as well.
It’s then 14/1 about Annacotty and then 16/1 for Oscar Rock, Cocktails At Dawn and Buywise. Generous Ransom and Sound Investment are at 18/1 and it’s 20/1 and over about the rest of the field.
We’re siding with two EW bets here and like the look of big runs from both IRISH CAVALIER and JOHNS SPIRIT.
