Champion Hurdle 2010 Tips Preview

The Cheltenham Festival is under a month away so over the next few weeks we are going to provide previews of the big races, today we are going to look at the Champion Hurdle

Champion Hurdle History

The champion hurdle was first run in 1927 with the winner taking a prize of £365, it did not run in 1931 due to frost, and 1944 due to the second world war, and like the whole of the festival it did not run in 2001 due to the foot and mouth outbreak. The champion hurdle has only ever had two sponsors. Waterford Crystal and the current sponsors Smurfit group being sponsors since 1990. The most successful Trainer is Peter Eastby with 5 victories Saucy Kit (1967), Night Nurse (1976 and 1977) and Sea Pigeon (1980 and 1981), The most successful jockey is Tim Molony won the race most often with four victories, on Hatton’s Grace (1951) and Sir Ken (1952, 1953 & 1954).
The course record is held by Istabraq in a time of 3 minutes 48.1 seconds.

The leading contender from the emerald isle is Go Native which is trained by Noel Meade. The 7 year old will be looking to notch up a second win at Cheltenham having won the Supreme Novice Hurdle last year in 2009. Go Native has already won some impressive grade one races including the Fighting Fifth Hurdle at Newcastle and also winning the Christmas Hurdle at Kempton seeing off a close challenge from Starluck
Other Fancied contenders include Solwhit who finshed third at Newcastle but has 3 grade one victories including beating the 2007 Champion Hurdle winner Sublimity in the Leopardstown Christmas Hurdle, and Solwhit beat Sublimity and the hot Donnas Palm last month to win the Toshiba Irish Champion Hurdle at Leopardstown.
