Alan King’s Smad Place has emerged as a potential lively outsider for the Grade 1 Ladbrokes World Hurdle at the 2012 Cheltenham Festival following his impressive recent win at Ascot and could book his ticket to take on Big Buck’s if able to land the National Spirit Hurdle at Fontwell next month, writes Elliot Slater.

The gelded son of Smadoun returned to the fray at Ascot having not been seen in competitive action since finishing in mid-division in the JCB triumph Hurdle at Cheltenham last March and had his training this term interrupted after throwing a splint. After being given time to recover the grey reappeared in the Grade 2 BetVictor.com Holloway Hurdle and despite being saddled with 11st 9lbs on his first outing for 10 months was noted travelling smoothly throughout the two-and-a-half-mile contest. Quickening smartly to lead approaching the final flight Wayne Hutchinson’s mount soon drew away from a good field and crossed the line seven-lengths clear of Shoreacres (received 6lbs) to stamp himself as a horse to follow. Even those looking at the Betfair Champion chase betting will have been impressed.

King was understandably delighted with his winner’s performance and confirmed that he has always held Smad Place in high regard. Having seen him stay on strongly on his first attempt at the Ascot trip the Barbury Castle-based handler observed that he sees no reason whatsoever why the grey should struggle with the extra-half-mile of the World Hurdle, but acknowledged the main problem will be trying to get within shouting distance of the mighty three-time winner Big Buck’s.

The Grade 2 National Spirit Hurdle, run over two-and-a-half miles with a stiff uphill finish, was won by Baracouda in 2001 before he went on to win the World Hurdle and by King’s My Way De Solzen before he too landed the stayers’ crown. Bookmakers however rate Smad Place at all prices between 25/1 and 66/1 at present and clearly are divided as to the current worth of his credentials.

Tony McCoy has been speaking about his return to racing, revealing that he should be back in action at Warwick on Thursday. This will be the first time he has taken to the race track since breaking several ribs at the start of last month.

Those assessing cheltenham festival free bets note how the injury occurred at Taunton, meaning that he hasn’t been able to compete in 2012 as yet. As well as breaking a few ribs, McCoy bruised a few lungs, so it was a very painful time for him.

The 37-year-old has been seeing a specialist though and has been given the all clear to return to action this week, with under two months to go until the Cheltenham Festival.

Speaking about his recovery, McCoy said: “The doctor is very happy so I should be back on Thursday. I’ve been feeling good the last week or 10 days. I went to see the doctor yesterday (Monday) and he was very happy with all the scans, my ribs and my lung, so I’m pretty pleased.”

“I broke a few ribs at the back and a few at the front as well. For the first week I was easy enough to deal with as I wasn’t able to do a lot.”

“For the last week or 10 days I’ve been a little more agitated and looking forward to getting back.”

“I would have liked to have come back sooner, but I wouldn’t have been able to. I punctured my lung and broke ribs and it was only just over three weeks ago.

“What worried me was if I came back and I wasn’t physically able to take a heavy fall again, I’d end up missing a lot more. I’ve missed the last three or four Saturdays and the disappointing thing is, I haven’t missed a winner.”

“I don’t know if that’s a good thing or a bad thing. I don’t know if I should be happy or sad about that.”

Everyone over at freebettingonline will tell you that McCoy was in excellent form prior to the injury of course, so this is something he will be desperate to continue in 2012. The last couple of years have been very special for him and he will want 2012 to continue the successful trends.

The 16-time champion jockey is now all set to ride Nicky Henderson’s Key To The West at Warwick with many horse racing punters keeping a close eye on his progress.
