America’s Kentucky Derby may be billed as ‘the most exciting two minutes in sports’ but it is a pale imitation of the original Derby for three year olds – the Epsom Derby. It is the most coveted jewel in the UK Triple Crown, so much so that many trainers are skipping the 2,000 Guineas Stakes in order to aim for the 2010 Investec Derby, held on Saturday, 5 June 2010. The 2,000 Guineas winner, Makti, is skipping the Derby.
Derby Contenders
The favourite for the Classic is any horse trained by Irish living legend Aidan O’Brien. Thankfully, all four are owned by different partnerships, so that makes four separate betting options for punters. So, the tough part is which O’Brien colt to bet on? O’Brien’s number one colt is St Nicholas Abbey, who lost in the 2,000 Guineas to Makti.
The second choice in the O’Brien barn is the undefeated Cape Blanco. His most recent win was in the 12 May Totesport Dante Stakes at York. In the run for a horse with the shortest odds, Cape Blanco may nose out St. Nicholas Abbey before the field comes under starter’s orders.
Jan Vermeer, a dark bay son of Montju is the third serious contender for the Derby trophy. Jan Vermeer sailed home in the 23 May Gallinule Stakes won at The Curragh with a 7 pound handicap.
The most mysterious and most promising is a drop-dead handsome son of Galileo, Midas Touch. Galileo won the Epson Derby back in 2001 and is now one of the most sought after stallions in the world. Midas Touch did live up to his name during his outing at the Derrinstown Stud Trial. Midas Touch contains the bluest of North American bloodlines going back to Mr. Prospector and Northern Dancer.
